The first Billick immigrants, Louis and Tekla, arrived in America around 1906 and within a few years settled in Toledo. Why they went to Toledo is uncertain but the area was by then a hub of Polish and Ukrainian transplants with its growing auto industry. The Billick brothers found or built homes within a mile or so radius of their parents and even the daughters, Anna and Helen, stayed nearby after they married. The family got together for traditional meals at Louis and Tekla’s home for Easter and Christmas (after midnight mass). Tekla was often driven to St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rossford for Eastern Rite services.
